This is the guide on qualities of the Cimmerian race and provide a background for roleplayers to draw upon when adventuring through the world of Hyboria. To understand a Cimmerian you must first understand the harsh and brutal landscapes of their homeland Cimmeria. Violent winters and dark, dreary summers are all the Cimmerians have known. On the northern landscape, the barbarous tribesmen live within icy mountainous peaks and fight for survival amongst bloodthirsty cannibals. Bears and wolves roam the wilds, stalking and preying, while scavengers circle the skies overhead. The woods of the south are stained with the blood of those foolish enough to think they could overtake a land who's semi-nomadic tribes have known nothing but war since their birth. When roleplaying a Cimmerian, try to keep in mind that your character has seen nothing but misery, violence and the constant struggle to survive. They would have been sent to battle as young as 15 years of age and have always lived under a veil of impending doom. Amongst all the doom and misery the Cimmerians have faced, they have managed to remain a very proud culture. A Cimmerians pride in their skill, cunning and physical strength serves as motivation for their actions. Their ability to track and stalk prey with complete silence strikes fear into the hearts of their enemies. It also makes them phenomenal providers, as each tribe has dedicated hunters who are revered for providing food for their entire tribe. When creating a Cimmerian character, many players choose to become great adventurers who heroically battle foes across Hyboria. Conan's desire to leave his homeland, however, was very rare among Cimmerians. Most Cimmerians have no desire to leave their tribes and care nothing of the world that surrounds them. A great alternative to playing the great adventurer would be to create a character that hunts and provides for its tribe. This not only would make your character true to Robert E. Howard's lore but would make them honored amongst Cimmerians. At the heart of every Cimmerian lies a deep devotion to their cruel and intolerant god Crom. To a Cimmerian, Crom's only gift was that of life and the strength to endure the ruthlessness it bestows upon them. That is more than enough to gain their faith. To keep your character true to the Cimmerian lore, be sure to never pray to Crom. Every Cimmerian knows that praying is a sign of weakness and would invoke the fury of the god, who has no patience for the weak. Also, a true Cimmerian would never utter his name except when swearing an oath or uttering a curse. Crom accepts no human sacrifices but his strength is what would propel your bloody wrath on the battlefield. We hope this guide has helped paint a good picture of the Cimmerian race to aid you on your adventures. One last thing to keep in mind is that in all the death and misery that each Cimmerian has faced, at their core they have managed to remain a noble and just society. Though uncivilized and barbarous, a true Cimmerian would never attack the weak or innocent. Keeping these principles in mind will not only make you more popular on your server, it will allow your character to stay true to the games underlying story. |
